Transparent by structure, not just by policy.
As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, LLIF files public financial returns and publishes an annual transparency report. Our finances are an open book — because they have to be, and because we want them to be.
Why this page exists
Financial transparency is standard practice for nonprofits. For LLIF, it carries additional weight.
Developers build long-term infrastructure on OpenLife Cloud. Researchers design multi-year studies on LLIF's data infrastructure. Both groups need confidence that LLIF will still exist, remain independent, and maintain its mission alignment for the duration of what they're building.
Financial transparency is part of that confidence. Not just annual filings — but a clear picture of how LLIF is funded, how it spends, and what governance mechanisms ensure the money serves the mission.

Learn About Data Partner AgreementsHow we're funded
LLIF generates revenue through infrastructure access fees paid by program organizers, app developers, and research institution partners. These fees support the operation and development of OpenLife Cloud infrastructure.
LLIF does not generate revenue from participant data. Participant data is a donor-restricted asset — it cannot be sold, licensed, or monetized regardless of future organizational circumstances. Revenue comes from the organizations that build on LLIF infrastructure, not from the participants who contribute data to it.
LLIF also accepts grants and philanthropic contributions in support of its nonprofit mission — particularly for community research programs and public health initiatives that serve participants who are not generating infrastructure fee revenue.
Who oversees the finances
Financial oversight at LLIF operates at two levels.
The independent board of directors approves annual budgets, reviews financial statements, and sets executive compensation. Board members are not employed by LLIF and serve fixed terms. Compensation is disclosed in the Form 990.
The annual Form 990 filing is publicly available and reviewed by the IRS as part of ongoing tax-exempt status verification. Any material financial irregularities could result in loss of 501(c)(3) status — a structural accountability mechanism that operates independently of internal governance.
LLIF engages an independent auditor for annual financial review. Audit results are included in the Annual Transparency Report.
